The women’s basketball team had an impressive opening to the season, defeating SUNY Cobleskill 60-54 even in what head coach Scott Hemer described as a “hostile environment.”
“We really maintained our composure,” Hemer said, emphasizing that the game provided a great experience for the team.
On Nov. 20 and 21 the Knights continued their success at a tournament hosted by The College of Wooster (Ohio). On Saturday the Knights defeated Trine University (Indiana), and on Sunday they battled Wooster to earn the championship title.
Against Trine, senior Khadija Campbell led the Knights with 13 points, going 4-7 from the field and 5-6 from the line. Senior Brittany Finkle added eight points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals. Senior Alyssa Polosky finished with nine points.
In the championship game against Wooster, the Knights started off slow, following Wooster’s lead for the first 14 minutes of the game. The team finished strong in the second half, holding Wooster scoreless for the final seven minutes.
Coach Hemer commended the team for their play against Wooster. “They picked up their performance level but their level of focus, especially in the last seven minutes … It was a good indication of what we can do when we put our minds to it,” he said.
Sophomore Taylor Hamlin went 4-7 from the arc to lead the Knights with 12 points. Campbell added 12 points, 16 rebounds, four assists and three steals to earn the tournament MVP award. Junior Bri Dunton was named the defensive MVP with seven steals throughout the weekend. Sophomore Melissa Graham was named to the All-Tournament team.
On Tuesday, the Knights opened the Wendy’s College Classic with a home game against Rochester Institute of Technology. Campbell totaled 14 points and 12 rebounds, and Polosky added 15 points to lead the Knights in a 71-55 win. Graham chipped in nine points and seven boards and Dunton dished out nine assists; overall the Knights earned points from 13 different players.
The Knights stand at 4-0 overall. The team continues the Wendy’s College Classic tournament this week, taking on Roberts Wesleyan College in the semifinals Thursday at 8 p.m.
I would like to see our young ladies live up to the standard that we set,” Hemer said. “If we do that we have a chance to win every game.”
