Ask Mia Anything: Advice Column

What should I do if I’m graduating this year and don’t have my life figured out? Everyone keeps

asking me what I’m doing after graduation but I don’t know what to tell them.

First, let’s recognize that it’s okay not to have your life figured out!! I urge you not to let the fear of uncertainty or judgment force you down a path you are not passionate about. Instead, continue to explore your interests, ask for help when you need it, and be kind to yourself. Choosing what to do with your life is often a process of trial and error. You don’t have to plan out your whole life out today, you just have to find somewhere to start. Professors and peers within your major can be a great resource when it comes to finding a starting point. Check-in on what other people are doing or have tried, not for the sake of comparison, but for inspiration and encouragement. And when people ask what your post-graduation plans are, don’t be afraid to tell them the truth. It’s not embarrassing to admit that you don’t have it all figured out, it’s brave.
