Ask Mia Anything: Advice Column

Have any tips on how to keep up your motivation for the second half of the semester?

College is a lot of work, and it is totally normal to feel burnt out, but you’ll be much happier come finals week if you find a way to stay on top of your studies now. Here are some tips to help you stay on track this semester:

1. Remember the time and money you have already put in: Don’t waste all of those hours you spent in the library by giving up this close to the finish line. You owe it to your past (and future) self to find a way to push through this. Don’t forget, you have spent a lot of money for the opportunity to learn everything you can. You already paid for it, now it’s time to collect!

2. Plan, plan, plan: I’ll admit, I’m not known for my planning and organizational skills. My room is a mess and sometimes I ask my Magic 8 Ball what I should do on the weekends, but even I will acknowledge the powers of a carefully planned semester. If you don’t already keep some kind of planner, I strongly encourage you to do so. Once you know your important dates, you can break the big projects up into smaller pieces. For example, if you have a big paper due at the end of the semester, make your own deadlines for when you would like to have your research done, finish your outline and start editing your first draft.

3. Take care of yourself: Even with all-star motivation and preparation, things will start to unravel without proper self-care. Eat food that makes you feel good, try to get a reasonable amount of sleep and make time in your routine for things that you enjoy. You can accomplish so much more when you are feeling your best.
