Highlights of the 2010s: TV

Modern Family (2009-Present)

Leila Sassouni

Modern Family first aired in 2009 and received both high ratings and views. This show is centered around three different families, each of which has a different family dynamic.

The show focuses on a nuclear family structure, a same-sex family structure and stepparent family structure. While I cannot pinpoint a specific episode, I think this show serves as an example of how society and the different familial systems have transformed.

While society once preached the standard nuclear family system, this structure has completely changed over time, adjusting to our changing society. This show is definitely worth the watch, or many viewings if you have time to spare!

American Horror Story: Murder House (2011)

Madelyn Dewey

Though the quality of the show American Horror Story is inconsistent at best, I maintain that season one: Murder House from 2011 is exceptional for its accurate representation of the power dynamics between men and women, advocacy for survivors of assault and surprising plot twists that effectively horrify and engross audience members.

My favorite part of this show comes when main character Dr. Ben Harmon—portrayed by Dylan McDermott—realizes that he’s been grossly objectifying every woman in his life, including his 90-year-old maid. Another incredible plot point comes when main character Violet—portrayed by Taissa Farmiga—decides to stop romanticizing a mass-murderer. If you’re a fan of scary content and strong women, look this show up on Netflix and hit me up so we can binge-watch it together.
