The Tau Alpha chapter of Kappa Sigma is relatively new, founded at Geneseo in 2014. Kappa Sigma, commonly referred to as “Kap Sig,” has quickly established a large presence on campus with 64 active members.
International relations and economics double major junior Steve Sciglibaglio is the president of the Kappa Sigma fraternity. He was elected in November of 2018, having previously served on the Executive Board as secretary during his sophomore year. He was nominated by a peer to run for president but was already interested in the position.
“I had been on the Executive Board for a year and knew I wanted to continue to play an active role in Kappa Sig,” Sciglibaglio said. “I knew how Executive Board functioned and was comfortable with it. It’s also a good resume builder, which is useful.”
Aside from Sciglibaglio, Kappa Sigma’s Executive Board consists of Vice President junior John Enright, New Member Educator and Head of Ceremonies junior Jared Valvo, Secretary junior Vincent Fredericks and Treasurer junior Devin McManus.
While Kappa Sigma is a relatively new fraternity at Geneseo, it is an old national fraternity, established in 1869.
Philanthropy is important to the members of Kappa Sigma. Their national philanthropy is the Military Heroes Campaign, which provides care for military veterans and their families. The campaign works to ensure that veterans have stability and support systems and has raised over $1,000,000 in aid since 2007.
Locally, members of Kappa Sigma participate in many community service opportunities around Geneseo. For Relay for Life, they run “Pie a Kappa Sigma” to raise money for the cause. Last fall, Kappa Sigma member senior Daniel Schroeder organized a clothing and food drive for a refugee shelter in Buffalo called Journey’s End Refugee Services.
Special education major junior Devin Hussey joined Kappa Sigma his freshman year and greatly appreciates the sense of community he has gained from his membership in the fraternity.
“The most important thing I have gotten out of being a member is being a part of something bigger than myself and developing positive relationships with other people in the Greek community, not only just those in my fraternity,” Hussey said.
Hussey also says his leadership skills have grown since becoming a member of Kappa Sigma.
“Developing relationships with different brothers has enabled me to become a better leader and definitely influenced my decision to become an R.A. this semester,” Hussey said.
Sciglibaglio echoed the sentiment.
“There are so many positions you can hold. A lot of guys do get really involved, and it gives you a great sense of responsibility,” Sciglibaglio said.
Both Sciglibaglio and Hussey encourage students to rush and get involved in the Greek community, which has improved their Geneseo experience for the better.
“Kappa Sigma has given me so many new friends to hang out with whenever I want and a really great sense of community,” Sciglibaglio said.
“It’s a very welcoming rush process, and all the brothers are respectful of who you are as people and really care about getting you involved,” Hussey said.
