When love is in the air and movie dates seem inevitable, few people would consider a film full of blood, vulgarity and red spandex high on a list of romantic options. But, as the titular character of Deadpool notes in the film’s opening scene, “some of the best love stories start off with a murder and that’s exactly what this is: a love story.”
Besides its original 2016 release date on Valentine’s Day, Deadpool truly has the heart and charisma to be considered a great romantic movie thanks to the incredible chemistry that exists between Wade Wilson—portrayed by Ryan Reynolds—and Vanessa—Morena Baccarin.
From their first Skee-Ball date, Vanessa and Wade hit it off thanks to their shared dark senses of humor and love of nostalgic references. After a sex montage that’s far funnier than it should be, the audience begins to root for the blossoming relationship early on in the film. This establishes a wonderful foundation for the audience to care about Wade’s tragic search for a cure to cancer and his subsequent revenge that carries the main plot of Deadpool.
Whether you and your significant other like Deadpool for its vulgar humor, impressively bloody action sequences or the heart that comes with Wade and Vanessa’s relationship, definitely don’t discount Deadpool as a go-to option on Valentine’s Day.
