The Geneseo administration hasn’t been completely transparent with its students and faculty. A variety of campus issues have occurred this semester alone, such as the closing of Milne Library and the unexpected blackout on the North side of campus, yet the administration hasn’t provided sufficient solutions for such issues. While we acknowledge that problems are natural and these issues aren’t the administration’s fault, we still expect them to keep Geneseo students safe and well-informed.
Milne Library’s closing has left many students feeling lost on where to access the library’s resources, such as computers, textbooks, help from CIT and study spaces. The administration needs to promote the movement of these resources to students. Many students posed the possibility of creating study spaces in Doty Hall, yet this solution has not been considered.
When the North side of campus experienced an unexpected blackout on Jan. 28, hours passed before the administration offered places to get hot showers and cots in Kuhl gym. A power outage safety plan was not set into action. During the planned power outage on Monday Feb. 3, the administration informed students it would last from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. but in actuality, it lasted until approximately 8 p.m. in some residence halls.
Though problems have seemingly piled up this semester, the fall was not without its issues. Following an incident that happened at Walmart last semester, the administration did not adequately inform the students even though it is in close proximity to campus and is frequently visited by students. A Facebook post was made in a group that many students were unaware of, allowing miscommunication to occur amongst those who were seeking more information. Many students were on edge due to the lack of insight on the incident, which could’ve been alleviated had the administration sent out a mass email.
Geneseo students should be able to rely on consistent and accurate communication with the administration. Additionally, the administration must take necessary measures to provide their students with essential resources that they expect to have consistent access to on this campus, such as power, heat and Milne’s many academic services.
