One of the most well-known students within the Geneseo student body is accounting major senior Tomas Caesar. He is most notable for his vibrant personality, fashionably inclined outwear and his tendency to twerk while smoking his hookah around campus. In addition to having a standout persona, he is an advocate for many different programs situated at Geneseo and is a role model for hard work.

Earlier last semester, Caesar raised money for his study abroad trip in Buenos Aires, Argentina all by himself. He was able to do this with the money he earned from a job he previously worked the following summer, as well as setting up a Gofundme page and selling empanadas on Orchard Street every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night throughout the fall semester.

It ultimately paid off when he was able to study abroad in Argentina for the 2020 intersession earlier this year in January.

“I would make over $200 a weekend in order for me to go on this trip and—[for] the rest of the money—I was able to raise that from my Gofundme account,” Caesar said. “Argentina was great, the people were great and super nice as well, the parties were great and the class was easy … It was the best time of my life and I would totally go back again.”

Caesar stated that he will be making a return to Buenos Aires in the coming year.

Caesar is active on campus, and his involvement gives him a more diverse perspective of the people here. Through his involvement in Omega Beta Psi, Caribbean Student Association and the Access Opportunity Program, he constantly gets to meet new students in other organizations.

One of his biggest obstacles following his graduation in a couple of months will be his ability to adapt to the atmosphere of his working environment. He addresses the struggles of being in a workplace that is mostly Caucasian people.

“In a school that is full of diversity, I’m going to be working in a field that is mostly white-dominated so I don’t really know the situations that I could potentially be in. So, being at Geneseo really helped me learn how to be more adaptable,” Caesar said. “[This program is academically one of the best] when it comes to business, so I think I am going to be prepared for it. I’m ready.”

He is an advocate for people to use their voices to spread positivity. Last year, there was a conflict regarding a teacher and their beliefs on blackface, and Caesar was very adamant about expressing his opinion on the controversy that occurred.

“I think everyone is going to have their opinions in regards to this teacher, and it all happened during the blackface incident in which it was historic for Geneseo considering we had a whole march for it,” Caesar said. “So, it was very powerful, the whole school came together which was the main thing to get from that.”

Reflecting on the past four years, Caesar has made it clear that it was both the people in his life that helped inspire him as well as that he stayed true to himself, regardless of what other people say about it.

In addition, Tomas wishes to continue to promote positivity on his social media handles and push people to be the most authentic and beautiful versions of themselves.
