Geneseo women’s lacrosse team inched close to a playoff spot with wins over SUNY Oswego and SUNY Fredonia, despite a loss against SUNY Brockport.

Geneseo defeated SUNY Oswego 22-9, fell to SUNY Brockport 15-7 and then rebounded, beating SUNY Fredonia 14-5.

Against Oswego, Geneseo got off to a flying start with a 6-0 early lead, three of which were by senior attacker Hannah Marafioti; however, a late half rally by Oswego cut Geneseo’s lead to 10-6.

Things got even closer early in the second half as two quick Oswego goals made the game 10-8. That would be as close as Oswego ever got, as Geneseo exploded in the second half scoring 12 of the next 13 goals, on the way to a 22-9 blowout victory.

Marafioti led all scorers for Geneseo with nine points (six goals and three assists), which is the second highest of her career. She set her career-high with 10 points in 2019 against SUNY Cortland. Marafioti believes there are a couple of important keys to her success.

“I think that confidence plays a big part in the success and consistency of a player, as well as a positive mindset,” Marafioti said. “I believe that my confidence and positive mindset have led to my consistency in the past three games.”

Marafioti was also the leading scorer for Geneseo in the loss against Brockport. Geneseo suffered their only conference loss to date with a 15-7 loss. Geneseo defeated Brockport earlier this season with a score of 15-12.

In the loss to Brockport, Marafioti scored four goals, with senior attacker Tessa Doody leading with two assists. Brockport’s defense stymied the Geneseo attack, who had reached double-digit goal tallies in each prior game.

Geneseo was able to keep the game within reach in the first half, trailing 9-5. In the second half, Brockport limited Geneseo to only two goals, ultimately outsourcing Geneseo 6-2, winning 15-7.

Junior goalie Margaret Rosaschi made 11 saves, her second-highest single game total of the season. Following the loss to Brockport, Geneseo rebounded with a blowout victory against Fredonia, 14-5.

Like the game versus Oswego, Geneseo got off to a flying start, leading Fredonia 6-0 midway through the first half. Doody scored the first two Geneseo goals within a minute of each other to give Geneseo their first two goals.

Doody scored her third goal of the half with seven seconds left in the half to give Geneseo an 8-2 lead. Marafioti scored two quick goals to start the second half to extend Geneseo’s lead to eight.

Geneseo’s lead grew all the way to 14-2 midway through the second half, with freshman attacker Reagan Vorgang getting her first career collegiate goal.

Fredonia scored the final three goals, ending the game at 14-5. It was important to rebound after the loss against Brockport, according to senior midfielder Megan Henderson.

“After a tough loss to Brockport a few days prior, myself and the entire team went into the game looking for redemption and to have some fun,” Henderson said. “This mindset allowed me to play loose and get back to our strong play.”

Geneseo looks to lock up a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) playoff spot this week with their final three conference games.

Currently, Geneseo sits in second place in SUNYAC’s west division behind Brockport who has clinched a playoff spot. If Geneseo were to secure a playoff spot, depending on their seed, they would face either the No. 1 or No. 2 seed in the East division in the SUNYAC semi-finals.
