Increase in COVID-19 case reporting's, result of student travel and visitors

As of Oct. 15, the College has reported 17 active cases of COVID-19 and 15 recovered cases, with 73 students in quarantine and 17 in isolation. Prior to Oct. 2, the campus had a handful of reported cases without creating a noticeable trend in transmission between students.

New Title IX Officer Hired, Intends to Support Survivors

A national search was conducted on behalf of the College and concluded to name Marcus Foster the new Title IX Coordinator. Before he joined the campus community, Foster served at the deputy Title IX Coordinator at Shippensburg University where he oversaw the University’s investigatory process regarding sexual misconduct allegations and led the campus’ preventative education curriculum. He received his bachelor’s degree in politics and international relations from Ursinus College and continued his education at Tulane University Law School.

Educational Opportunity Program students travel to Albany for Higher Education Action Day, advocate for funding

On Feb. 27, Educational Opportunity Program assistant director Gabe Iturbides joined with five EOP students to participate in Higher Education Action Day. The group traveled to Albany to advocate for a 20 percent increase in funding for EOP.

The office of academic planning and advising is piloting an early alert system called Navigate. This initiative is one mentioned in the Geneseo 2021 Strategic Plan, which outlines a specific focus to implement an early warning system to track student progress throughout the semester to broadly “pursue innovative and proactive retention and student success strategies.”

I attended the Campus Conversation Open Forum on Thursday Feb. 13. I sat on the floor because there weren’t any chairs, amazed and excited at how many people demonstrated initiative to engage with the administration over recent issues. I was quickly disappointed, however, in the campus community as the forum progressed.

Title IX office participates in The Clothesline Project

The Title IX office participated in The Clothesline Project from Monday Oct. 28 to Tuesday Oct. 29 beginning at 10 a.m., offering students a unique opportunity to engage in shirt decorating in an effort to educate the campus community about the project’s message: violence is never an isolated incident. An array of colored t-shirts embellished the outside of the Title IX office, located in Blake C, with phrases such as “we hear you” and “we stand with you.”

Investigation opened for sexual and physical assault almost five years later

On Oct. 4 2014, a female student reported to the college that she felt herself to be the victim of what Livingston County District Attorney Greg McCaffrey describes as a “brutal, forcible sexual and physical assault” perpetrated by another student in a campus residence hall. The college did not notify any local law enforcement agencies and criminal charges were not pursued.

Student Association updates “Whatsup” listservs for students who want to promote events, organizations

At the beginning of the Spring 2019 semester, the Student Association changed the policies regarding Geneseo’s Class of listservs, which students used to promote clubs or events. Student Association has since changed the “Whatsup” listserv, which all students receive, so organizations can use it to disseminate their information.

Geneseo women’s tennis coach resigns after questions surrounding his conduct

Geneseo tennis team coach since fall 2015 Jason Stephens resigned in November due to reasons related to his commute to the college, according to the athletic department. Players of the tennis team spoke to his behavior during his time at Geneseo to be “unprofessional,” and attribute this to his departure from the college.
