Softball goes 3-1 in two doubleheaders

The women's softball team emerged victorious in three of its last four games, dominating in two matches against SUNY Morrisville on Saturday and winning one of two against SUNY Brockport on Tuesday.

The Knights' Tuesday trip to Brockport saw them lose the first game of the doubleheader, 4-3. The team scored three runs on seven hits, but it wasn't enough for a victory. Sophomore Sam Chin went 2-3 with one run scored, and junior Liz Squairs went 1-3 with an RBI. On the mound, freshman Janine Montera struggled a bit, allowing three runs but striking out five in six innings.

The Lady Knights bounced back in the second game, however, tallying 10 hits and prevailing 6-4. Squairs went 1-4 with two RBI, while Chin went 2-4 with two runs, two RBI and her first home run of the year.

"I was so thrilled when I got my first home run," said Chin. "The energy of the team is really helping me do well."

Junior Kerry Kuhn was a little shaky on the mound, allowing 11 hits and four earned runs in seven innings, but still came out with the win.

On Saturday, Geneseo hosted Morrisville in a doubleheader, and the Knights came away with a win in both contests. In the first game, Geneseo won 9-1, scoring nine runs on 11 hits.

Junior Nickie Steger went 2-3 with a leadoff triple in the bottom of the first and two runs scored. Chin was 1-2 with two RBI and two runs scored. Junior Sara Weisenborn was 1-2 with two RBI and a run scored in the game, while Montera was the winning pitcher, allowing no earned runs and striking out six in five innings.

The second contest was much of the same, as Geneseo pounded out 13 hits and won 9-0. Sophomore Katie Holm went 3-3 in the game, including a two-run homer in the bottom of the first. Freshman Megan Pogemiller was 2-3 with two RBI and a run scored and Kuhn got the win on the mound for Geneseo, allowing zero earned runs and striking out three in five innings.

The team was scheduled to play SUNYIT on Sunday, but the games were postponed due to inclement weather.

Chin had an extremely productive week, and is showing her teammates that she belongs in the starting lineup.

"She came in really wanting that starting job and she has showed that she deserves it," said Steger.

Montera and Kuhn have both performed well on the mound this year, but they have only a combined six wins to show for it.

"It's frustrating to watch our pitchers throw well enough to win but still lose," said Steger. "We've talked about giving them the run support they need and making plays behind them."

"We're a great team and need to believe in ourselves," said Montera. "If we play well the wins will come."
