The women's field hockey team split their two-game homestand this weekend with a painful loss on Friday and an uplifting win the following day.
On Friday, the Knights dropped a double overtime against the St. Lawrence University Saints with a final score of 3-2. Both teams battled through a scoreless first half before Geneseo finally scored at the 38:07 mark in the second half.
Junior Libby LeRoy converted a pass from senior Sarah Doster on a penalty corner for the 1-0 lead. With her eighth assist of the season, and 20 overall, Doster became Geneseo's all-time assist leader.
Head coach Jessica Seren commented on Doster's achievement. "Sarah Doster breaking the all-time assist record at Geneseo is a result of her composure and patience on the field," Seren said. "She really has done an excellent job of distributing the ball into the circle to our forwards and midfielders."
St. Lawrence answered back at 45:33 to tie the game but LeRoy took back the lead with her second shot of the game off an assist from sophomore Rianna Travers. The Saints refused to give up and tied the game at 59:47 on a penalty corner goal.
The first overtime period looked much like the first half but during the second overtime period, St. Lawrence's Joss-Elyse Smith slipped by Geneseo's defenders and scored the winning goal on a breakaway. Junior Emily O'Leary made three saves in taking the loss.
On Saturday, the Knights turned around their three game losing streak with a 3-1 victory against SUNY Morrisville.
The Knights came out firing as sophomore Stephanie Maisonet collected a rebound and fired it into the back of the net. Morrisville managed to tie it up with their only shot of the day at the 27:03 mark, slipping it by O'Leary on a scramble in front of the net. That was as close as the game got as Geneseo scored two more goals for the win.
"I thought overall our weekend went very well," said Seren. "We had a very tough loss in double-overtime to St. Lawrence on Friday but we fought hard. St. Lawrence is a quality team so I was very pleased with the teams' effort. They were able to bounce back from this loss and get a solid win on Saturday which secured a second place finish in our conference."
The Knights' second goal of the day came with just 13 seconds left in the first half, when Maisonet scored her team-high ninth goal of the year on an assist from Doster on a penalty corner.
Sophomore Michelle Milkovich completed the scoring at 55:22 after a feed from LeRoy.
The Knights improved to 6-7 on the year and clinched second place in their conference at 5-1.
The team will travel to Brockport on Saturday Oct. 25 at noon to take on their rival.
