Meghan Adams IRC dance to benefit scholarship fund

In honor of the late Meghan Adams, Putnam Hall Council is hosting a dance to raise money for a scholarship in her name.

Adams' friend and former roommate and current Putnam Hall Vice President junior Stephanie Wisniewski, came up with the idea for the dance. She brought it before the council, who approved and helped plan the details. Campus Auxiliary Services and the Inter-Residence Council will help sponsor the semi-formal dance, which is formally being called the "Wish Upon a Star Winter Ball."

Wisniewski decided a dance would be an appropriate way to remember Adams because it was a memory she shared with her friend.

"In the spring '07 [semester] there was a winter ball dance held in the Union," she said. "Our entire group of girls went together and it was a night we enjoyed with Meghan."

Adams, a childhood special education and history major, died on July 26, 2008 after a battle with cancer. She would have been a senior this year.

The scholarship in Adams' name will be awarded to a fellow education major. Two of Adams' friends had the idea to raise the money through ticket sales for the dance.

Tickets will be sold in the Union lobby from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. starting Feb. 27. They will also be sold from March 2 through March 4 during the same time period. Tickets will be $5 during pre-sale and $7 at the door.

Wisniewski says she hopes many Geneseo students will honor the memory of their deceased peer by attending the dance and contributing to the scholarship fund.

"Meghan was a student who lived for Geneseo," she said. "Through the scholarship, she can live on in spirit at a place that she loved."

The dance will be held Thursday, March 5 from 8 to 10 p.m. in the College Union Ballroom. More information can be found in the Facebook group titled Wish Upon a Star Winter Ball.
