The Learning Community on Social Justice is a group of students who meet weekly to discuss readings that highlight problems around campus and in the larger community.
Members learn to identify historical and contemporary injustices in order to later address them. Last semester, the organization was awarded a Vice President's Diversity Grant, allowing them to purchase books.
Members are currently reading Savage Inequalities by Jonathan Kozol and learning about disparities in public education. Political science and international relations professor Edward Drachman will be joining the group on Wednesday, March 11 at 5 p.m. to share his research on this topic.
The group ensures that every member has an equal say in deciding which direction it takes. The Learning Community supports existing efforts on campus and members are also involved in other groups. The group aims to increase communication and cooperation between organizations to effect greater change.
The Learning Community on Social Justice urges readers to look for a Lamron opinion article in the future that will detail misinformation campaigns in recent elections, one of the topics of the group's discussion.
The organization also invites anyone who recognizes societal and global problems, and wishes to vent and ultimately work to fix them, to meet with them on Sundays at 8 p.m. in the Mosaic Room in the College Union.
