Since graduating with a Bachelor of Science in accounting in 1995, alumna Kim Hausmann has made her fair share of home runs in New York City.
After leaving small-town Geneseo, Hausmann pitched her accounting career into action as she started as an associate with Coopers and Lybrand, now more commonly known as PricewaterhouseCoopers. She worked in the middle market practice on publicly traded companies.
In 1998, Hausmann became a certified public accountant, allowing her to leave public accounting in 1999 to pursue a divisional controller job in the private sector.
"I have served as the controller of a publicly traded network consulting company which eventually was sold in 2003; director of financial reporting and assistant controller of Sirius satellite radio, now Sirius XM; and currently as vice president and controller of MLB Advanced Media, the official interactive media company of Major League Baseball," said Hausmann.
Hausmann explained that MLB Advanced Media was established in June 2000, following a unanimous vote by the 30 MLB club owners to centralize all of baseball's Internet operation. "MLBAM manages the official league site, www.MLB.com, and each of the 30 individual club sites to create the most comprehensive Major League Baseball resource on the Internet," she said.
Currently overseeing the accounting team, Hausmann's job entails the implementation and adherence to proper controls and procedures which govern the day-to-day operations, accurate and timely reporting, compliance with accounting rules, regulations and pronouncements, supporting other business functions within the company, working with upper management to achieve annual goals and most importantly, ensuring that her team is learning and being challenged on a regular basis.
"What I enjoy most about my career with MLB.com - aside from working with an extremely talented group of professionals and, of course, enjoying the sport - is the growth potential," said Hausmann. "Every day is professionally challenging as there is always something new to learn."
"When I look back, the key things that I took away with me after four years at Geneseo were a great education and wonderful friendships that have endured for more than 15 years," said Hausmann.
She advises students to maintain a healthy balance: "Work hard and perform well in class," she said, "but be sure to take the time to cultivate relationships with colleagues and friends."
