Blue Wave defeats Cortland, improves to 3-0

The Geneseo Blue Wave continued their dominance this past weekend against SUNY Cortland with both the men and women’s teams picking up victories.

Geneseo hosted the Red Dragons, the women winning handedly with a score of 167.5-127.5 and the men with a score of 163-131.

Junior Dan Strothenke won the men’s 100-yard and 200-yard freestyle races with times of 48.32 seconds and 52.97, respectively. He also contributed to the 400 medley relay victory with classmates Josh Kaplan, Kenneth Pink and Aaron Wagner in a final time of 3 minutes, 38.48 seconds.

Kaplan also went on to win both the 100 and 200 backstrokes with times of 54.11 seconds and 2:02.6, respectively.

Another standout was sophomore Austin Brennan, who posted a 55.26 time in the 100-yard butterfly. “Brennan had a really great performance for us,” said head coach Paul Dotterweich.

On the women’s side, senior Michelle Rodriguez continued her stellar season with wins in every individual race she entered. This included times of 1:01.29 in the 100 backstroke, 24.74 in the 50 free and 2:11.18 in the 200 backstroke. Dotterweich said after the meet, “She’s our superstar.”

Dotterweich also noted senior Jen Anthone as having a particularly outstanding performance. She anchored the 400 medley relay team to a win; freshmen Lauren Boyce and Lily Powell and sophomore Kaitlin Wilcoxen rounded out the quartet. Anthone also won the 100 free with a time of 55.75 seconds.

The diving teams had mixed results in both the three- and one-meter competitions. Cortland’s Lauryn Kaznowski, a graduate student, captured the win in the one meter but Geneseo senior Wills DeMoulin took the men’s one meter with an incredible score of 295.25. In the three-meter, it was sophomore Cassie Brown who posted a score of 226.00 for the win; Cortland’s Travis Burke succeeded on the men’s side.

On Saturday, the Blue Wave will face Ithaca College, Hartwick College and host Hamilton College.

“We should definitely be tested this week,” said Dotterweich. “We know Ithaca is strong on both sides and we should have our hands full on Saturday.”
