Local non-profit organization Livingston C.A.R.E.S. continued its tradition of service by taking its 20th trip to the Gulf Coast to assist with Hurricane Katrina relief over the winter break. A group of 25 worked in the area of Biloxi/Gulfport, Miss. In this group were 20 Geneseo students, three faculty members and two community members.
Since the project began, it has involved over 500 volunteers. Volunteers stayed until Jan. 15 and worked to repair homes and other structural damages brought on by the hurricane. Tom Matthews, director of leadership education, development and training in Geneseo's Center for Community, said in a press release,
"Our 20th trip is a notable milestone but there is still a great amount of work to be done to help the people on the Gulf Coast return to their homes." Livingston C.A.R.E.S. has scheduled additional trips to Mississippi for this spring.
