Parents’ Weekend Oct. 21-22, 2011

Parents' Weekend is coming up and this year's schedule is filled with a variety of entertainment, educational and sporting events to take place on Oct. 21–22.

"Our goal is to give parents a feel for what it's like to be a Geneseo student," said Tammy Ingram, director of parent relations. "[Parents College] shows parents of current students the passion that professors have for their areas of expertise."

Parents College offers a wide range of classes taught by Geneseo faculty members, such as "The Immune System: Friend and Foe" and "You Said What? Exploring Language as Symbolic Action." Around 400 of the 800 parents that come for the weekend sign up to participate.

"Parents know what their kids are experiencing socially, but these mini-college classes give parents an inside look on the academic aspect of the college life," Ingram said.

Many entertainment options are available to parents, including the Geneseo Theatre Club's production of "Equus" directed by Joshua Tarp, on both Friday and Saturday nights at 8 p.m. and Kaleidoscope on Friday night, which will feature Geneseo's musicians and performing artists.

Parents will also have the opportunity to attend a Geneseo Opportunities for Leadership Development (G.O.L.D.) workshop on Saturday afternoon along with a program called "What I know now, that I wish I had known then …," during which a group of Geneseo alumni will talk about their past experiences and advise parents and students about how to stay a step ahead with college coursework and in the job market.

There will be a buffet-style Fall Harvest dinner on Saturday night followed by Limelight's presentation of comedian John Heffron, winner of the second season of NBC's popular television show "Last Comic Standing," in Kuhl Gymnasium.
