As Halloween approaches, we all probably have some unique costume ideas planned out. Although it's still a week and a half away, there's no harm in putting those brilliant costumes to use a little early. In fact, you can support Geneseo's Colleges Against Cancer by participating in its second annual Halloween Dodgeball tournament on Wednesday Oct. 26 at 6 p.m. in Kuhl Gym.
Colleges Against Cancer is an organization that works in strong pursuit of raising cancer awareness on campus as well as in the community by hosting events and fundraisers such as the coming tournament and Relay For Life.
CAC president and senior Sarah Cantatore said that CAC hopes for a large turnout at this year's Halloween Dodgeball tournament. She wrote via email, "We wanted a way to raise funds and awareness for cancer in a fun, light-hearted manner."
The winning team will receive a cash prize; smaller prizes will be awarded based on other essential factors such as best costumes, best team name and other recognitions. Therefore, costumes are essential for fun, prizes and the sake of Halloween.
The money raised through the tournament will go into CAC's account to fund the other programs that the group hosts throughout the school year. With aid from the funds earned at the tournament, CAC will be able to fund other beneficial programs throughout the year such as the American Cancer Society's Hope Lodge in Rochester, smoking demonstrations, Breast Cancer Awareness Month and, most noteworthy, Relay For Life.
All students can participate in the dodgeball tournament as long as they enter with teams consisting of six to 10 people. If you have a solid group, make sure to either download registration forms through Knightlink or pick them up in the Center for Community office located in Union 353-354. It costs $5 per person to play. Forms and fees should be dropped off in the Center for Community by Friday Oct. 21 at 4 p.m.
Interested in joining this rewarding organization? CAC's weekly meetings take place on Thursdays at 7 p.m. in the Fireside Lounge upstairs in the College Union. Otherwise, submit your fees and forms as soon as possible, devise an original costume and get ready to have fun for a charitable cause.
