Softball goes 3-5 in annual trip to Clermont, Fla.

The softball team went 3-5 in its annual spring break trip at the National Training Center in Clermont, Fla. The trip concluded Friday March 22.

On opening day Monday March 18, the Knights defeated No. 30 Amherst College 10-8.

Geneseo trailed 5-4 in the fifth inning, but exploded with four runs at the top of the sixth inning. Amherst posted three runs in the bottom of the seventh, but first-year Corrin Spallone and freshman Katie Brennan halted Amherst’s momentum.

Sophomore Nicole Zimmerman started on the mound for the Knights and held Amherst at two hits and four runs in three innings. Zimmerman also struck out three.

Sophomore Ashley Fillmore collected four hits to lead Geneseo’s 13 hits against Amherst’s nine. Fillmore added three runs and two RBIs.

Junior Sam Trapasso tallied two doubles in four at bats, bringing in three RBIs and sophomore Abby Weiss successfully stole twice against Amherst freshman Sarah McKay.

In the second game against St. Lawrence University, Geneseo fell 7-6.

Geneseo scored early with five runs from six hits. Fillmore and Trapasso accounted for three of the six hits. Trapasso added three RBIs.

Freshman Samantha Brown went 2-4 with an RBI to pace the Knights’ offense.

Senior Katie Gallagher tossed five innings, striking out five, but allowing six hits and seven earned runs.

Spallone relieved Gallagher in a one-hitter effort. Spallone struck out four of her seven opponents.

The following day, Geneseo beat Allegheny College 13-7 and blanked the University of Massachusetts Boston 7-0.

The wins improved the Knights’ record to .500 on the season.

Allegheny and Geneseo tied at seven runs apiece going into the fifth inning. Geneseo opened the scoring once again with six runs in the final two at bats.

Geneseo tallied only one more hit against Allegheny, but took advantage of opportunities from Allegheny’s seven errors.

Trapasso’s triple and home run tallied four RBIs for the Knights and Gallagher threw a complete game, striking out seven Gators.

The victory over UMass Boston marked the fourth win over five games for the Knights. Geneseo combined for 10 hits over Boston’s five. Senior Lexi Williams and sophomore Catherine Heacox hit a pair of singles apiece to lead the Knights’ offense while Trapasso collected two RBIs in a single and a double.

Geneseo lost its momentum on Thursday March 21, dropping a pair of games to Hope College 8-3 and the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire 8-7.

Freshman Mikayla Moore singled in two RBIs as designated hitter against the Hope Flying Dutch and Trapasso and Williams tallied the other two hits for Geneseo.

Gallagher tossed 4.1 innings, holding the Flying Dutch to four hits and Brennan came in relief for 2.1 innings, allowing three hits. Gallagher and Brennan struck out two apiece. Freshman Paula Janowsky closed the game for the Knights, sitting down her only opposing batter.

Brown, Trapasso and junior Elise Porreca each recorded a pair of hits of the Knights’ nine hits against Eau Claire.

Trapasso hit her 11th career home run, tying for seventh in Geneseo’s all-time list, in addition to collecting three RBIs.

Brown scored three runs in addition to her two RBIs.

Spallone replaced Zimmerman on the mound early, allowing six hits and three earned runs in 5.2 innings.

On the final day of competition, the Knights fell to Bowdoin College 3-1 and Elmhurst College 6-5.

Williams went 2-2 against the Bowdoin Polar Bears, including a solo home run – her second of the season and the ninth of her career.

Spallone threw a complete five-hitter, striking out eight.

In the spring break finale, Williams and Trapasso brought in five runs from their doubles in the first and second inning, respectively. Fillmore scored two of the runs.

Zimmerman threw a seven-hitter complete game, striking out five.

Geneseo returns to host SUNY Plattsburgh in a 3 p.m. doubleheader on Friday March 29 to open SUNYAC play.
