Since fall break, Geneseo women’s volleyball team has increased their record to 17-7 on the season. The Knights took down Houghton College on Oct. 9, Clark University on Friday Oct. 12 and Plymouth State on Saturday Oct. 13. The only team to give the Knights trouble was Wellesley College, who they lost to on Saturday Oct. 13.
Their game against Houghton proved to be exciting. It was the Knights Dig Pink game where the team held raffles and a silent auction for fans to participate in. They raised over $2,800 for the Slide Out Foundation in support of breast cancer research.
Not only did they raise money for a good cause, but the Knights came up with a 3-0 win with game scores of 25-16, 25-19, 25-22. Sophomore middle blocker Kiersten Colvin swung for 11 kills, had two assists and three digs. Senior setter Emily Ast set 13 assists. Junior outside hitter Abby May swung for nine kills and dove for 15 digs. Freshmen outside hitter Maddie McLaughlin swung for 11 kills and had three digs.
Three days later, the Knights faced Clark University on the road. The Knights left victorious with game scores of 25-15, 19-25, 25-13 and 25-17. Ast stacked the stats with four kills, 47 assists, two aces and 15 digs. May swung for 15 kills, had two digs and served an ace. Junior outside hitter Grace Cergol had a double double with 20 kills, 11 digs and also added one assist and three aces.
The next game for the Knights was the only loss since fall break. The scores from the match against Wellesley were 22-25, 11-25 and 22-25, with Geneseo on the losing end of all three games. Freshman setter Morgan Michalski had one kill, set up eight assists and had three digs. Ast had 1 kill, 18 assists, one ace and had five digs. Junior libero Sam Mendelsohn had one assist, served four aces and had 17 digs.
“Wellesley is a well-developed team and we really held our own against them despite what the scores show,” Colvin said.
Colvin believes the mindset and team effort the Knights used against Wellesley is similar to what they will need for this weekend’s SUNYAC tournament.
Later in the day on Saturday Oct. 13, the Knights were able to pick up a win against Plymouth State. The match scores saw the Knights go 3-1 with 28-26, 18-25, 25-16 and 25-20. During the four games, May swung for 12 kills, served two aces and had nine digs. Sophomore outside hitter Alexandra Frank had 16 digs and served three aces for the Knights.
The Knights take on SUNY Plattsburgh Friday Oct. 19 at home at 5 p.m. On Saturday Oct. 20, they face SUNY New Paltz at noon and SUNY Fredonia at 2:30 p.m. The Knights look to improve to a 20-7 record by the end of the weekend.
“We flip the switch to a fun and relentless mentality,” Colvin said.
