Club Profile: Put your best foot forward with the Running Club

With all the tests, papers and homework that students have every week, there is almost no time to see friends, have any time to relax or even sleep, let alone workout. It is very hard for students to juggle everything that is going on in college, which is where the Geneseo Running Club can come in.

The running club was started last year by then-sophomores Tessa Beiter and Lauren Todoro. They met freshman year and wanted to run, but on their own terms without the commitment of cross country or track. They found out that there was no running club at Geneseo and decided to begin their own.

“We’re a non-competitive running club and we’re focusing on trying to make the campus healthier and get students out to run,” biology major and Running Club co-president Beiter. “We know that it’s really hard motivating yourself to go out and run. I know it is for me and I’m co-president.”

There is no commitment for running club; every student is free to come and go as they please. The club’s goal is to help students become as healthy as possible and to provide support for running. Running Club welcomes every student, whether a beginner or a pro, and wants to create a welcoming environment for students who want to focus on exercising and bettering themselves.

“We just want to provide a supportive environment for people to come, and we accept any level and any distance and pace that people want to run. We try and accommodate anyone,” Beiter said.

The club participates in many five-kilometer runs, including a recent fundraiser that was organized by the track and field team. They also ran the McQuaid 5K for cross country in Rochester, that was held in October.

“We do 5K’s and stuff if people want to. There are options to sign up for them and we’ll try and carpool to events and everything,” Beiter said. “The track team put on their fundraiser 5K, so we ran, and we actually had a really good turnout for that.”

As this is a new club, Beiter described what she hopes to see as far as accomplishments in the future. These goals include gaining more members and running in more locations outside of the Geneseo area.

“[We want to] just get more established, have more of a schedule and we hope to do more outings,” Beiter said. “[We want to try for] more drives to go to Letchworth and run at Letchworth and just try and get off campus a little bit more.”

As of now, the club meets by the outside track on Mondays and Wednesdays at 4 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays at 8:30 a.m. and Sundays at 9:30 a.m. However, the club will soon be moving the location where they meet and plan to begin practicing indoors at the indoor track in the hockey arena.
