Daylight Savings Time is outdated, has negative repercussions

Daylight Savings Time is coming up; on Saturday March 8 we’ll all lose 60 minutes of sleep as our clocks spring forward. Many people will groan about our loss of beauty sleep—especially us Geneseo college students, where sleep deprivation is part of our daily culture.

Letter to the Editor

I write in reference to an article in The Lamron titled “Legalization of sex work in U.S. would ensure safety within industry, surrounding community,” by Aliyha Gill. As stated in the text, the predicted benefits of legalization include the ability to report malicious behaviors without fear of punishment as well as a decrease in sex-trafficking. Legalization also encourages the use of protection, which results in a decreased risk of STIs.

Staff Editorial: Starbucks’ online ordering is inconvenient for employees, users should be grateful

While online ordering was implemented in Geneseo’s dining halls to assist students and faculty in managing their time, many users unrealistically expect error-free service from those working behind the Starbucks counter. At Starbucks, up to 14 online orders can be submitted every 10 minutes. Coupled with the often long line of walk-in orders, it’s nearly impossible for baristas to finish orders quick enough to ensure a minimal wait time for every customer.

People should focus on intimacy in social interactions, not distractions on their phones

As a senior here at Geneseo, I’ve had plenty of time to get to know how college students socialize with each other. Whether it be at an off-campus party, a school related event or any large spectacle, people my age have become increasingly reliant on using social media as a way to connect with each other. In a time where going through Snapchat stories or Instagram posts is a way to see what almost all of your contemporaries are up to, people often forget to stop for a second and just enjoy the moment.

Anti-body-shaming movements must expand to include men

The movement against the body-shaming of women has been going on since second-wave feminism began in the 1960s. While it is still a prominent issue women face, something that is often forgotten is that men have to deal with this problem, too.

Staff Editorial: Weinstein’s criminal convictions display how sexual assault cases should be handled

Harvey Weinstein was prosecuted for criminal charges of sexual assault and rape on Monday Feb. 24. The disgraced producer has been under investigation since 2015, when multiple women spoke out about being sexually assaulted by him. Efforts to give Weinstein the punishment he deserves have been painstakingly occurring for more than five years as government officials, juries and the public questioned whether or not they should believe the women who came forward.

Extended library renovations will negatively affect students’ study methods

Geneseo is regarded as one of the best SUNY schools you could possibly go to. With excellent professors, a beautiful campus and countless opportunities, it is easy to fall in love with the school. However, on Feb. 11, Geneseo students received an email from the Office of the President that announced Milne Library will not be reopening at the beginning of next semester after being cleared of asbestos, but instead will be fully renovated and reopened in the 2024-25 school year.

Students shouldn’t disregard well-researched campus publications when addressing issues

I attended the Campus Conversation Open Forum on Thursday Feb. 13. I sat on the floor because there weren’t any chairs, amazed and excited at how many people demonstrated initiative to engage with the administration over recent issues. I was quickly disappointed, however, in the campus community as the forum progressed.

Billionaires’ unlimited use of personal funds for political campaigns threatens democracy

Michael Bloomberg is a lot of things; ex-New York City mayor, a friend of the elite and, the newest feather in his cap, current candidate for the Democratic ticket in the 2020 presidential election. His political record is dicey, between his championing of racist policies such as “stop and frisk” during his time as mayor, off-hand transphobia—he was recently quoted calling a trans woman “a man in a dress” by The New York Post—and muddied history with minority groups across the United States.

Noah Centineo’s tweets are witty, introspective, relatable to fans

You may have heard of Noah Centineo, who plays Peter Kavinsky in the hit Netflix To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before trilogy and played Jesus Adams Foster in “The Fosters” from 2015 until the series finale in 2018. Centineo has been deemed the “internet’s boyfriend” due to his good looks and charismatic personality. Something that’s often overshadowed by Centineo’s attractiveness is his tweets.

Unnecessary killing of bugs must cease; their lives are valuable to our eco-system

Bugs: just the word itself could make your skin crawl. The bothersome pests can be found in our homes, by our food and virtually anywhere outdoors. What better way to spend one’s summer than to make a game out of murdering bugs?

Bezos’ environmental effort is admirable, but small in comparison to what is needed

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos pledged to donate $10 billion to combat climate change, an initiative called the Bezos Earth Fund. His program will fund research and activist projects to address the climate crisis. While this donation is no small feat, it does not excuse all of Bezos’ previous poor choices.

Men deserve better fashion choices than the dreary, colorless options they’re given

Men’s fashion is somewhat of an oxymoron, considering the options are usually neutral-toned basic T-shirts and pants, with the occasional long sleeve or thin V-neck sweater thrown into the mix. There’s nothing “fashionable” about it.

Valentine’s Day is about more than just romantic relationships

It’s that time of the year where the love letters, red roses and gifts come out in full force. The feast of Saint Valentine is a day of romance where lovers celebrate their bond with the exchanges of greetings and joy. It is a day that blooms with hearts, cupid’s arrows and hugs and kisses. As much as this holiday is a special day for romantic lovers, this holiday should also be appointed for all types of relationships.

Staff Editorial: Geneseo administration needs more transparency, solutions to campus issues

The Geneseo administration hasn’t been completely transparent with its students and faculty. A variety of campus issues have occurred this semester alone, such as the closing of Milne Library and the unexpected blackout on the North side of campus, yet the administration hasn’t provided sufficient solutions for such issues. While we acknowledge that problems are natural and these issues aren’t the administration’s fault, we still expect them to keep Geneseo students safe and well-informed.
